Detail on on Headstone for Mrs. Elizabeth Goudey (1796) and Elizabeth Perry.
Date, inscribed using Old Style. Figures (numbers) can be represented in either of two styles. Lining figures are all the same size and are comparable to uppercase letters. Old style, which is used here, employs different sizes for different figures and subscripts some figures. As shown here, the figure 1 is smaller than the other figures, and the 7 and 9 are subscripted. The 4 in 84, shown above, also is subscripted.
John Legg (1718)
Headstone for John Legg (1718). Coat-of-Arms on Headstone for John Legg (1718).
The John Legg headstone is one of two bearing a coat-of-arms. It's contained within a diamond shape which, in turn, is contained within a heart shape. The stone is now set lower in the ground than probably was intended, and the lower portion of the design is obscured. The other stone bearing a coat-of-arms is the one for Richard Hawley (1698).
